What do others have to say about this?
Jean Kilbourne: the author of the video "Killing Us Softly" published for first time in 1979, launched this documentary as a way of creating awareness of the dangers of the media. She exposes several examples of models and artists suffering from dangerous diseases because of the media. She also explains how the unrealistic beauty standards presented in the media has slaved women to fit into the imposed parameters. Kilbourne believes that this problematic is getting worse from how it used to be, and she believes that they are mortifying not only our body but our mental health. |
Lindsay Abrams: in her article “Study: We Benefit From Seeing Strong Women on TV” published in 2012 in The Atlantic website, challenges these arguments on the negative image of women in the media and gives hope. Abrams argues that the presence of women in the media can enhance positive images of women in today’s society. According to Abram’s study, TV shows portraying tough female characters are better ranked; therefore, rather than portraying an objectified image of women, it “combats” the social ideas of gender inequality. |
